Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed first chargesheet in Ishrat Jahan encounter case. CBI chargesheet says the encounter was fake and was joint operation of IB and Gujarat police. CBI will further probe IB officials in this connection. Murder charges have been slapped on former Gujarat top cops. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have not been named in the chargesheet. CBI is silent on whether Ishrat was a terrorist or not.
The fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others still carry explosive potential. The police said Ishrat and her accomplice had plans to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, but the claim was demolished by several investigating agencies.
Now, the CBI's says that all the four victims were murdered in a planed way. They were picked from different places and executed on an appointed day. Even the FIR of the case was drafted by the cops before the encounter, says CBI in the chargesheet.
A college student from Mumbai, Ishrat Jahan (19) was killed along with three men -- Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Gulam Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar -- on June 15, 2004 by the Gujarat Police Crime Branch officials, who alleged they were Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives involved in a plot to assassinate Modi.
The investigators allege that a fake alert had been sounded by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and passed on to the Gujarat police which in turn carried out the encounter.
IB Special Director Rajendra Kumar, a 1979-batch IPS officer of Manipur- Tripura cadre, had allegedly generated the intelligence input that a group of LeT terrorists are coming to Ahmedabad to target the Gujarat chief minister. The central investigating agency says that it has enough evidence to prove that Kumar hatched a conspiracy to carry out the 'fake encounter'.
